Aviva Accu-Chek Blood Sugar Monitor
The Aviva Accu-Chek is an innovative system with several nice features that help to simplify the process of checking your blood sugar.
At A Glance
- Small amount of blood necessary for testing
- Quick readings
- 97% chance a reading will be delivered on the first attempt
You may have already heard of this system, and for good reason. Some of the features the device boasts are little more than cosmetic conveniences and don't really affect the device's performance, so those should probably be ignored unless you've narrowed your choice in glucometers down and need something to help tilt the scales as you make your decision. That being said, the device has enough conveniences on its own merit that the Aviva should probably be a device that you at least give some consideration to.
There seems to have been a trend in the glucometer business lately, the idea being to reduce the amount of blood that's necessary to get a reading. The Aviva is no exception to this trend, and by all accounts it seems that Accu-Check delivered. The Aviva boasts a 97% rate of delivering a reading with the first sample and claims to have 198 checks in the system to make sure that the reader delivers an accurate reading within 5 seconds, and it does all of this with just a .6 microliter sample size. The system also claims to have simplified the lancing process considerably, mostly by making the lancets easier to load and use. Another nice feature of the Aviva is that it can store up to 500 readings that you can download to your computer to keep track of your blood sugar levels.
Of course, the system has some disadvantages. For example, the Aviva does not offer a feature that seems to be becoming more and more standard across glucometers, the ability to represent your data graphically over a period of time. Many other devices out there will show you a simple, easy to read chart that graphs your results over the past few days, weeks, or month. Instead of this, the Aviva offers to give you an average of your readings for the past week, two weeks, or month. This isn't so terrible, but an average isn't going to be able to show you spikes in your readings. An unusually high peak might throw your average off, leading you to think that most of your readings have been unusually high instead of having one or two readings that were just astronomic. If this information is represented graphically it's much easier to see where a peak was much higher than it should have been. Another con is that the device doesn't really give you a warning when the battery is low. It does tell you that you will need to charge the device soon, but usually by the time it tells you this, the device is already closing in on having no battery power left. Overall, the Aviva is a good device.
