Mio Drive Heart Rate Monitor Review

Mio Strapless HRM

The Mio Drive heart rate monitor is basic strapless heart monitor. It also calculates calories burned and gives a readout of % of max heart rate.

At A Glance

  • Five different exercise timers
  • Tracks personalized heart rate and shows percent of maximum heart rate
  • Accurate heart rate monitor without a chest strap

The Drive has most of the features of your standard heart rate monitor watch, but throws in a few extra features that really make this a unique product. Of course, it does exactly what the name implies- measures the heart rate of the wearer. It does this without requiring the user to wear a chest strap, which adds a certain degree of convenience. As a tradeoff, however, it means that the device does not deliver a constantly updating heart rate reading, but instead delivers a reading on demand of the user. The device also uses a personalized profile to know what the user's maximum heart rate is and tells the user what percentage of that maximum heart rate their current heart rate actually is. The exercise timers help to make sure that the time spent exercising is maximized efficiently, and the device has a patented calorie countdown system.

There may be a few problems with the device, however. The customer feedback for this device is very mixed, and a fair bit of that mixed feedback falls on what might be a very large fault of the Mio Drive. Supposedly, the monitor can be grossly inaccurate. If the entire point of purchasing a device like this is to have a functional heart monitor so that the user can track their heart rate throughout the day and during exercise, it would obviously make sense that an important feature of the device should be an accurate heart rate monitor. Unfortunately, it seems to be a distinct possibility that this device does not meet that criterion. Additionally, there was some negative feedback that indicated that even if the heart rate monitor was accurate, there was a distinct possibility that it is so difficult to get the device to perform a reading that it is just more frustrating than it is worth.

The list price of the device is just under ninety dollars, but you can find it cheaper online. If the device functioned as advertised this might not be such a bad price for this product, though it might still be a bit overpriced. The device has a few extra features, but not so many that the list price of the product should be nearly double the price of many comparable devices. That being said, the customer feedback plants the seed of doubt that this device just doesn't work as it should, so even if the device were reasonably priced it might be a bit of a risky investment. This might be a device that you want to skip.

Our recommendation is to upgrade to the Mio Drive +
